Thursday June 18 National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington DC arranged a colorful Graduation Ceremony at lawn of the National War College. Participants from US and other 60 countries received their degrees and credentials. From Bangladesh Two officers Air Commodore Mofidur Rahman and Colonel Emdad Islam participated in two yearlong separate programs and received the degrees.

Dr. Tahmina Banu: A doctor with a mission   


After a hot day in May 2014, it was well past midnight when Aleya Begum brought her two-day-old baby boy to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). They came from East Ratili, Sonagaji, Feni, a small town located about 90 km north of the port city of Chittagong. The baby was born with a number of birth defects. He didn't have an anus and it was suspected that he had kidney and urinary system malformations. Alauddin, the baby's father and a poor rickshaw puller, had pretty much abandoned the family. Aleya's in-laws could barely conceal their wish for the newborn to die.

After the Red Cross Center's administrator and my newly found friend Gerry Bailey's departure, I was hesitant to visit the premises. I was not sure how Gerry's replacement would turn out to be.
